The La Mariposa first grader and her family were one of 110 families whose first and second graders' work was on display Thursday night at the school’s 7th annual family art night in Camarillo. Additional info for Julie Price:

Seven years ago five first grade teachers (Christine Elliott, Karen Davis, Tiffany Armas, Kathy Wadley and Jeanette Huntting {CQ}) were inspired to bring art to their classrooms at La Mariposa in Camarillo. Now at the start of each school year the first graders, and a handful of second graders are immersed in a weeklong introduction to one of eight artists until all of them are covered. “It’s a great way to start the year”, says Elliott. By October the children have a firm base knowledge of each artist and have emulated their styles in their own creations on exhibit at the school’s annual art night.

This year the children studied Jackson Pollack, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Vincent Van Gough, Paul Cezanne and Andy Warhol. According to Elliott, 110 families were in attendance for the hour-long open house. One of Elliott’s first graders, Roman Cottrell {CQ} has an easel in his bedroom at home according to his mother, Alisha Cottrell, who is adamant about the value of the program to her son. “It’s really important because this is his thing. His brother has football and Roman has this”. Very shy with few words, Roman says, “I like it”.

Brandon Dinh says he enjoyed recreating Monet’s Japanese bridge, “I liked the water and the reflections”.
